Project Overview
NGS-BATFLEX aims to develop next-generation energy storage solutions, focusing on transforming batteries into flexible assets within modern energy systems.
The project covers the entire battery value chain, from components and packs to integration into distributed energy systems, demonstrating storage services that increase the integration of renewables, the flexibility of the electricity system and the overall efficiency of the grid.
The initiative involves 47 entities, including companies, research centres and associations, and aims to create an internationally competitive national battery ecosystem capable of:
- Produce innovative technologies on a large scale;
- Integrate storage solutions into Energy Communities;
- Validate flexibility services for the electricity system;
- Ensure end-of-life management and recycling of batteries to global standards.
NGS-BATFLEX combines technological and demonstrative Work Packages, allowing each WP to operate independently but interconnected, forming a circular and sustainable value chain.
Cleanwatts Digital Role in the Project
CWD contributes to NGS-BATFLEX with expertise in digitisation and advanced management of storage assets, including:
- Development of algorithms for intelligent battery management in different use cases (CO₂ reduction, energy cost minimisation, system service provision and participation in energy markets);
- Integration of new decentralised batteries into the CW OS platform;
- Participation in the development of flexibility business models, including services such as FCR (Frequency Containment Reserve);
- Implementation of digital solutions that enable CWD’s technical participation in flexibility markets, providing network services and energy arbitrage;
- Support for the demonstration of solutions in Energy Community pilots, validating the actual operation of distributed batteries and associated services.
Demonstration pilots include consumer and prosumer integration, equipment auditing and installation, and KPI assessment in a real environment, ensuring the commercial and technical validity of CWD solutions.
Strategic Relevance for CWD
Involvement in NGS-BATFLEX reinforces CWD’s strategic position in the digital energy sector, enabling:
- Advancement in battery-oriented energy management;
- Enabling participation in flexibility markets;
- Integration of digital solutions in Renewable Energy Communities;
- Strengthening of the CW OS, Kiplo® FLEX and Kiplo® REC product portfolio;
- Creation of opportunities for international replicability and commercial exploitation of the solutions developed.
Expected Impact for CWD
